Description
Malawi is one of the poorest African countries, with a heavy reliance on subsistence farming. Suffering from both droughts and heavy rainfall, however, the country is also reliant on a high volume of food aid. President Mutharika has vowed to stamp out corruption and the government has pursued a policy of privatising many loss-making state corporations. Malawi depends on economic assistance from international bodies and countries, and recently improved relations with the IMF have led to increase aid from international donors.
