Description
A vast country with immense economic resources, the DRC has been troubled by conflicts which slowed economic growth. It is the largest producer of cobalt, and a major producer of copper and industrial diamonds. The main source of revenue has been minerals, and petroleum is the country's largest foreign exchange earner. Agriculture dominates the economy, contributing half of the GDP. According to IMF estimates, mining contributes 8%, manufacturing 4% and trade and commerce 17%, though there is also massive unrecorded trade in minerals. The country has great agricultural potential, but its main cash crops such as coffee, timber, palm oil, cotton, cocoa, rubber and tobacco have declined due to conflict.
