Description
Known for its periodic droughts and famine, Ethiopia is Africa's oldest independent country and the original source of the coffee bean. Agriculture accounts for about 41% of the GDP. Commercial farming is not developed and production is mostly by small-scale farmers. Its main exports include coffee, hides, oilseeds, beeswax and sugarcane. Little privatization of key sectors including finance and telecommunications has occurred, even though a private sector is growing. Ethiopia has large mineral resources and oil potential.
