ICT - Information & Communication Technology

Like the rest of the world, Africa’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a core factor of businesses. The sector is in the middle of a remarkable transformation fuelled by a combination of technological, market, policy and regulatory developments.  Fixed-line telephony network has been slow in the continent, mainly due to cost and infrastructure, thus mobile telephony has taken root in the continent. Privatisation of telecommunication in most African countries has opened a market for mobile telephony whose penetration has been hampered by illiteracy, cost of computer hardware and connectivity. Dial-up connectivity is common in many countries, with broadband just catching up, though expensive. Ongoing fibre-optic construction will improve on the cost as well as the quality and speed of communication.  However cross-border projects like SEACOM (Seacom is a private company which will construct a 15,000km submarine cable system that connects Southern and East Africa, Europe and South Asia) and TEAMS (The East African Marine System - will link Kenya to the rest of the world)are dragging because of the complexity of acquiring necessary gateway licenses.
