JULY 2009 ISSUE 6

In the July issue of the TradeInvestAfrica newsletter we highlight some of the business opportunities offered by the aid and development organisations active in Africa. The opportunities in this sector are often overlooked and our article provides useful links to further procurement information. Our two interview features provide a snapshot of the retail sector in East Africa. As always, TradeInvestAfrica also highlights interesting investment opportunities in other sectors across Africa.

FEATURE ARTICLES:
Historically much of the business of supplying relief and development agencies with goods and services has gone the way of companies in developed/donor countries. Thankfully, the controversial practice of tied aid has changed over the last few years and there are numerous opportunities for African companies to get involved in ensuring that some of the 'business of aid' benefits local companies.
INTERVIEW:
Kenyan retailer, Nakumatt, is making a concerted effort to secure its dominance by expanding into other countries in East Africa and innovating its current retail offering. We spoke to Sailesh Savani, a director at Nakumatt, about the supermarket group’s progress in the region.
INTERVIEW: Around East Africa with a shopping trolley
NEWS: Blue to offer short-term loans to entrepreneurs across Africa
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Process fresh vegetables for export market
