The World Bank will invest $75 million in energy and ICT projects in rural Uganda to increase access to renewable energy and ICT,  to benefit businesses and households.

This is the second Energy for Rural Transformation project funded by the bank. The project is in line with Uganda’s strategy to invest more in availing affordable and reliable power to citizens.

The cost and shortage of power has been a setback for businesses.

World Bank’s power engineer Paul Baringanire said the bank is considering investments in solar and thermal power.

"In the second phase of this project, we shall set up 30-50MW power units in the development of rural renewable energy. These developments will support the potential of the private sector in Kasese and Mpondwe…” said Baringanire
