The ongoing construction of a landing station for Seacom undersea cable in Dar es Salaam is expected to lower telecommunication costs and open new opportunities across various sectors.

$600 million African Initiative Communication Cable project is expected to be ready by June and starts at Kunduchii suburb in Dar es Salaam.

Excavation and sea marking of the Seacom route are under way at Kunduchi, where the sea cable, 900 metres under the sea and extending from South African waters to Egypt, will land.

Seacom Tanzania managing director Anna Rupia told the media in Dar es Salaam reduced cost of bandwidth will benefit call centres and business process outsourcing industries.

Seacom's 15,000km fibre-optic undersea cable will ultimately connect South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya and India, as well as Europe by June 2009.

Disciplines such as educational, clinical and scientific research, which rely on real-time sharing of data around the world, will also become a reality for many Africans organisations.

Seacom’s enormous capacity will enable high definition TV, peer to peer networks, IPTV, and surging Internet demand.
