The Kenya Railways Corporation has announced a new tender for the construction of a modern high capacity 2,156 kilometres standard gauge rail line between the port of Mombasa and Malaba.

The tender, advertised in local newspapers, calls for preliminary design, environmental and social impact assessment services for the proposed railway, whose construction is set to begin in 2012.

The corporation cancelled a similar tender recently claiming the amounts quoted were way above the project budget of $4 billion.

The deadline for submitting bids is on 25 June, 2010.

The current railway system in East Africa is obsolete resulting in high operation costs for businesses.
