Luxembourg-based telecoms company, Millicom International Cellular (MIC) has recently gone live as Rwanda's third national mobile operator with an initial investment of around $50 million.

The East African reports MIC launched its Tigo brand earlier in November by rolling out 2G, 3G and 3.5 technologies.

MIC secured an operating licence for just over $60 million, beating 17 other companies, including Zain and Telecel Globe. Tigo's entry will provide competition to Rwanda's two existing operators, MTN Rwanda and Rwandatel.

According to the company's chief executive officer, Alex Kamara, Tigo will offer the best pre-paid plan in the market with the most affordable rates.
