East Africa Portland Cement Company has moved into Rwanda to resolve the shortage of cement that is a major challenge to the construction sector there.
The Kenya based company has opened an agency in Rwanda to distribute 100,000 tonnes of cement annually, says The New Times.
Managing director John Nyambok said distribution is also set to begin in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the tune of 50,000 tonnes per year.
Rwanda’s largest cement maker CIMERWA is currently producing 200,000 tonnes of cement per year, leaving a deficit of over 100,000 tonnes.
East Africa Portland current overall production capacity is at 1.3 million metric tonnes.
