Company profile: Established in 1972, the Bomas of Kenya is set on an 83 acre leasehold site in Langata, Nairobi. Its principal economic activity is to showcase cultural entertainment and display  traditional arts to both local and foreign tourists. Existing facilities include a bar, restaurant and an auditorium. Gate collections from visitors coming to watch cultural dances account for 60% of the total revenue. Optimum use of existing facilities and the development of new components would make Bomas a profitable venture.

Investment opportunities for joint venture partnerships

1. Bomas of Kenya Tourist Hotel

The site is close to Nairobi National Park and the Animal Orphanage. It is also off the way from the heavy vehicular traffic experienced in the Central Business District where most tourist hotels are located. The location is also quiet, making it very ideal for conferences, workshops and seminars.

Cost of Investment: The feasibility study that was undertaken was for a 5-star,100-bed hotel, but current indications are that a 200-bed hotel of international standards would be more appropriate. The project was estimated to cost US$5-million to develop the 100-bed hotel, which would include a conference centre, swimming pool and other amenities.

2. Bomas of Kenya Amusement Park Project

The proposed amusement park is expected to attract both domestic and foreign tourists. The return on investment is guaranteed considering that there are not many such facilities for entertainment in the country. The park features will include roller coasters, children playgrounds, a continuos film in a “futuristic theatre”, fun fair with ferries wheel, dodgems, mechanical games and a massive swimming pool with several gigantic slides that should accommodate several hundred people.

Cost of investment: The project is estimated to cost an estimated US$2.4-million.
