Project name: Cement manufacturing
Sponsor: Bunyonyi Safaris Ltd.
Promoter: The Uganda Investment Authority (UIA)
Project description
Bunyonyi Safaris Ltd., a Ugandan company, is seeking a strategic investor to partner in extracting limestone for manufacturing cement. The company owns a limestone mine with substantial limestone deposits. Mining the limestone quarries will require technology to produce and bag cement. The sponsor is therefore also seeking for price quotations for both a 50-100 tonnes per day mini cement plant and a 3-10 KW hydro-electric power turbine for the proposed cement production project - the company is interested in establishing a mini cement plant as well as a mini hydro power plant. There are waterfalls at River Kaku where the power turbine will be installed to produce the electricity required
by the cement plant. Excess electricity will be supplied to the national power grid.
Project location: South western Uganda
Cost of the project: US$ 1.3 million
Project justification
Over the last decade, Uganda’s construction sector has experienced steady growth, with real estate developers making big money serving a growing number of middle class consumers willing to buy premium houses. Rapid urbanisation has also resulted to an increased demand for housing, and consequently an increased demand for building materials. Existing cement manufacturers lack capacity to satisfy the local market. This has forced them to cut back on exports by an estimated 90%. The proposed cement manufacturing plant intends to capture this market share.
