Cattle population has stagnated over the past decade, while the population of the small ruminants, particularly goats has grown considerably. Dairy production supplies only half of the national demand yet there is significant unused capacity in the processing industry, with most of the plants running at only 25% capacity. Meat production is also very low - current production levels translate into per capita consumption of 1.3kg per annum.
