Mauritius aims to increase renewable energy production to about 40% within the next decade. To achieve this goal, further investment in wind farms, solar plants, biomass plants, and air-conditioning from the Land Based Oceanic Industry (LBOI) is a priority.
Investment opportunities
• Production of renewable energies and manufacture of related equipment and components.
• Trade in carbon credits
• Green building initiatives, which promotes buildings that use alternative sources of energy.
Sector
80% of Mauritius energy is derived from burning imported fossil fuels, which is costly and has increased greenhouse gas
emissions by 20% since 2000. The country launched the US$40m Sustainable Island Programme fund, which supports the protection of environment through recycling and encouraging more efficient use of renewable energy. Development finance institution Agence Française de Developpement (AFD) estimates that the investment potential in the energy sector is up to US$100m over the next five years.
