Project: Provision of tourist airplane charters

Project location: Kigali International Airport - The airport, located about 12 Km from Kigali City is the primary airport and the main air gateway for all destinations in the country. It also serves as a transit airport for Goma and Bukavu in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Expected investment cost: US$3,042,000

Estimated return on investment (ROI) is 3% the first year and 15% the fifth year.

Project summary

The proposed tourist charter plane project will be expected to serve as a link to the strategic areas of tourism in Rwanda’s four provinces through existing airports or airstrips. These include Kigali International airport in Kigali city, Kamembe in Western Province, Gisenyi airport in North- Western, Huye airstrip in the South, Nyagatare airstrip in Eastern province and Gako airstrip in the South Eastern region.

The tourist charter plane company will be established at Kigali International airport to provide easy access to arriving tourists. The ongoing upgrade of Kigali airport facility will provide space for additional services such as charters.

Overview: Rwanda’s deliberate policy to develop its tourism sector has reaped remarkable results, earning the country US$42 million in 2007 from a paltry US$5 million in 2002. The country’s changed image has continued to draw tourists in droves who visit to see various attractions like the endangered mountain gorillas, Lake Kivu Littoral, national parks with multiple ecosytems, and the rich culture.  Travel to these sites by road can be tiring and time consuming for tourists wanting to see more of Rwanda within the shortest time possible.
