Malawi ranks tourism as a priority area for development and is inviting investors to develop and manage the country’s tourism infrastructure. The sector has potential for growth particularly in areas surrounding Lake Malawi and several eco-tourism sites.
Investment opportunities
Development of Tourism Along Lake Malawi: Construction of lodges, transport facilities (including cruise ships along the Lake), and recreational activities.
Ecotourism: The potential for growth in ecotourism is enormous. Prospective investors may develop some of Malawi's unique areas of natural beauty around Lake Malawi, Mulanje Mountain, Nyika Plateau and protected areas such as national parks, wildlife reserves, and nature sanctuaries. Achieved work: Pre-feasibility studies have been carried-out on various eco-tourism developments in tourism-designated areas.
Cultural Tourism: Opportunities exist in the
development of the country's rich cultural tourism, including showcasing of arts and crafts, traditional dances, local village culture, and historical sites such as slave trade villages.
Hot Springs: There are numerous virgin hot springs in Malawi which offer tremendous potential for tourism development. Hot springs are found in Nkhotakota, Liwonde and along the northern lakeshore.
Accommodation: Opportunities exist in the construction and management of hotels, lodges and camps.
International Conference Facilities: The Government is actively promoting the construction of international conference facilities in Lilongwe, Blantyre and along the lakeshore.
