Project: Mfumbaneni hatchery
Location: Mpisi, central Swaziland
Description: Located on 100 hectares of land, Mfumbaneni hatchery would produce day-old-chicks and eggs. This will be achieved by upgrading and expanding the existing infrastructure, which includes three breeding houses, one office block and staff houses. The hatchery is located 20 kilometres from Manzini.
Cost of investment: Minimum of US$1.5-million
Payback period: 2 years
Rate of return on capital: 29.6%
Investment structure: Joint venture
Industry overview: There are about 800 poultry producers in the country who range from small-scale suppliers to those delivering 20 000 chickens a week. Processors receive an estimated 25 000 to 30 000 chickens per
day. The largest abattoir and processor supplies 60% of the local requirement. There are two main companies working in the same field, but only one with a substantial investment. The government is encouraging local production to cut back on imports from neighbouring countries, and has implemented legislation to protect local producers. However, the majority of eggs for chick production and day-old chicks are imported from South Africa.
Fiscal incentives: Available, depending on the scale of investment.
