The Lubombo TFCA, which borders Swaziland, southern Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, consists of five separate transfrontier conservation areas linked by the Lubombo Mountains. They include Usuthu-Tembe Futi, Songimvelo-Malolotja, Nsubane-Pongola, Lubombo Conservancy and Goba.
Usuthu-Tembe-Futi: Usuthu Gorge
Investment opportunities: The Usuthu Gorge wilderness investment project (situated in a proposed community nature game reserve area spanning 9 290 ha) falls within the Swaziland boundaries of this TFCA. A concession will be offered by the Swaziland Government against this project on behalf of the Mambane community under a public-private partnership.
This low-volume medium-value campsite along the scenic Usuthu Gorge is a proposed community nature reserve and game reserve, which initially proposes the establishment of two unattended campsites each accommodating 20 beds. Basic ablution facilities will be available and serviced once a week. Activities at the campsite will include game viewing, canoeing, bird watching, hiking and fishing. Development possibilities also exist for the establishment of a lodge on this site.
The terms and conditions of this concession will need to be negotiated with the Swaziland Government, the Swaziland Investment Promotion Authority and the Swaziland National Trust Commission (SNTC), which is the authority mandated to proclaim and manage protected areas in Swaziland.
