Angola has been making significant steps to rebuild its tourism industry in recent years, and much has been done to rehabilitate existing tourism sites in the country.

While it has always been renowned for its hunting locations, Angola also has a number of rehabilitation projects (including wildlife and demining), as well as proclamations of national parks that will see the encouragement of elephant migration back into the area.

Elephants are a flagship species within the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area – which also borders Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe – as it hosts the largest populations in the world.

There are two specific investment opportunities currently available with the Kavango Zambezi TFCA in Angola, for which concessions have been awarded:

Luiana Game Reserve in Jamba

The Luiana Game Reserve is an existing facility situated in the province of Jamba. The concessionaire seeks to invite investment for the development of a game lodge consisting of 16 two-bed rooms.

Jamba ranks among the most popular tourist destinations in Angola. It is known for its diverse natural surroundings and rich cultural traditions.

It is located in the southern part of Angola and its name is derived from the abundance of wild elephants in the area. Attractions and activities in Jamba and the game reserve include game and bird viewing, scenic and ancient cultural sites and off-road activities.

Access to Jamba is made easy through the Jamba Airport, which handles domestic flights.

Coutada’s Lodge

Four hunting lodge concessions have been awarded to a local investor who seeks to partner with private investors in the development of these identified lodges, each consisting of 9 two-bed facilities.

Investors should be aware that that before forming a company, foreign non-residents must visit the Angolan Private Investment Agency (ANIP), which regulates the private investment policy and the granting of incentives.

There are a variety of incentives available including a 50% reduction for used machinery and a 100% exemption for new and unused goods; as well as other exemptions on customs tariffs and other taxes.

For more information on the various legislative issues involved in investing in Angola visit the Reports channel on the Boundless Southern Africa Project website, which provides more detailed information.
